What is Personal Financial Planning?

As the word suggests this differs from person to person. A Personal Financial Plan cannot be a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, it needs to be tailor-made to suit each individual person’s circumstances.

It is about objective, measurable advice that should result in a plan to manage their current and future financial needs and goals.

As part of this process we help clients to identify and manage the financial risks and obligations that they might face. These include:

  1. Dying “too soon” and leaving debt and/or dependants who need to be taken care of.
  2. Living “too long” and running short of money.
  3. Suffering a disability (for short or extended periods).
  4. Building up funds for emergencies.
  5. Avoiding or paying off debt.
  6. Minimising tax.
  7. Thinking long term, with savings and investments.
  8. Asset Allocation. Asset Allocation involves dividing an investment portfolio amongst different asset categories, such as shares, bonds and cash. The process of determining which mix of assets to hold in a portfolio is a very personal one.

Financial Planning needs to be holistic. It cannot be done in isolation, because it has an effect on all areas of the client’s life. It is also about simplifying unnecessarily complex products that can sometimes appear to have been designed to avoid revealing the real costs and risks involved.

We recommend that our clients review their financial plans on a regular basis. This should be done annually, and every time there is a significant life-changing event, such as a birth, marriage, divorce, retirement, and the purchase or sale of a property.

Sue has over 25 years of financial planning experience and offers financial planning and investment advice to clients throughout all stages of their financial journey. She follows a careful due diligence process in doing this to align the investments with her client’s risk profile and specific needs at the time – right from the first pay-check to the last and then on into retirement. Like the rest of the team at Personal Wealth Managers, she manages the investments in her care on an ongoing basis ensuring that they continue to be appropriate for the client’s needs and stage of life, recommending changes where appropriate.
